Walnut Creek, Contra Costa County
Broadway Plaza opened in downtown Walnut Creek in 1951, one of the earliest open-air shopping centers in the Bay Area, and it still anchors a retail district that draws shoppers from across Contra Costa County. The city has also bought up ridges and valleys around its edges, and several thousand acres of that open space are laced with trails.
